With many countries wanting to become climate neutral (or carbon neutral) by 2050, the UN is calling it “the world’s most urgent mission.” Therefore sustainability is on the agenda for lots of companies in 2022. But most don’t know where to start with such a complicated process.
Fenns has been championing sustainability initiatives for a while now. Supporting our clients by offering recommendations which aim to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprints. So here’s a three step process to help you become climate neutral…
Measure your carbon footprint
Information you’ll need to effectively measure your carbon footprint is as follows:
- Energy, Gas and Water consumption
- Business travel and employee commuting time
- Consumption of supplies and equipment as well as the source of them
Most businesses forget to include consumption of items like supplies, office furniture and workwear to their calculations but these can make a huge difference to the success of any initiative.
Once you have this information you will then need to select the appropriate emission factor for each emission source in order to calculate the tonnes of CO2 emitted. More information on how to do this can be found here.
Reduce your emissions as much as possible
There’s many ways for a business to reduce its emissions. Here are some of the most popular:
- Recycle using schemes like our recycling service
- Use recycled resources: we have ranges of recycled supplies, furniture and workwear
- Use sustainable suppliers with the ISO 14001 certification - it’s proof that an organisation has a commitment to the environment
- Switch to hybrid or electric vehicles
- Invest in green energy and green office equipment
- Provide seasonal workwear and uniforms for your team to save on heating and air con
Offset what you cannot reduce with UN certified emission reductions
Carbon offsetting is a way to compensate for your emissions by funding a carbon dioxide saving elsewhere. You can find relevant projects by looking on the United Nations Carbon Offset Platform.
Many carbon offsetting projects also provide wider benefits like biodiversity conservation, better education, more jobs and food security as well as better health and wellbeing in developing countries.
